Whether you're moving, chasing a better price, or escaping unreliable service, switching internet providers is usually straightforward if you plan a little. The two biggest goals: avoid a gap in service, and avoid paying two providers at once.
Before you switch
- Check what's available at your new or current address and compare current offers.
- Note your existing contract's end date and any early-termination fee.
- Confirm the new plan's price, term, equipment, and installation details with the provider.
Timing the transition
Where possible, schedule your new service to start a day or two before you cancel the old one. A short overlap costs a little but prevents being offline — which matters if you work from home.
Setup day
- Have account details and ID ready for installation or self-setup.
- Test the connection on multiple devices once it's live.
- Note the speeds you're getting so you can confirm they match your plan.
After you switch
- Cancel the old service and get written confirmation of the cancellation.
- Return any rented equipment promptly and keep the return receipt to avoid fees.
- Check your final bill from the old provider for unexpected charges.
Keep your records
Save confirmation numbers, equipment-return receipts, and screenshots of promised pricing. If a charge looks wrong later, that paper trail makes it far easier to resolve.
Done in the right order, most switches take a few days end-to-end with little or no downtime — and often a noticeably lower bill.
